Papers of the Berkeley family [manuscript], 1859-1985 (bulk 1963-1985).

The collection contains correspondence between Mary Randolph Berkeley and W. Hugh Peal of the Loudoun County Historical Society, genealogical correspondence of Mary R. Berkeley and William Noland Berkeley pertaining chiefly to Norborne Berkeley but including an autobiographical account by Francis Taliaferro Brooke and 3 items pertaining to the Iglehart and Waddell families. Also a few personal papers of Mary R. Berkeley; postcards and pamphlets re Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire; and miscellaneous Berkeley material including a genealogical chart by William Clayton Torrence, and a photograph of a portrait of Norborne Berkeley, Baron de Botetourt.

Yardley Taylor (ca.1796-1863) was a geographer, surveyor, and chronicler of the Loudoun County area in the mid-nineteenth century. His descriptions in Memoirs of Loudoun County and Joseph Martin's 1835 Gazetteer of Virginia provide clear images of Loudoun County in the antebellum nineteenth century. A devout Quaker, Taylor was also a leading voice in the abolitionist movement. William Moore (fl. 1810-1859) purchased a 107 acre tract of land from John Nichols (1802-1884) ...

W. Hugh Peal graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1922. He became one of the first Rhodes Scholars from the university. He studied Law at Oxford and became a successful lawyer in New York. He received an honorary LL.D. from the University of Kentucky in 1959. In 1981 Peal donated his collection of rare books and manuscripts to the University of Kentucky Libraries. Francis Taliaferro Brooke was born in Smithfield, Va. He served in the Continental Army. In 1788, he was admitted to the Virginia Bar. He married Mary Randolph Spotswood. Brooke served in the Virginia House of Delegates and in the Virginia Senate. His second wife was Mary Champe Carter. Brooke was judge of the Virginia General Court and the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. He died 3 March 1851. From the description of Papers, 1796-1804. (College of William & Mary).
